History of the WNAO

This stableford competition was launched in 2008 and toured many venues in its early life before finding a permanent home at
Dudsbury Golf Club & Spa
Initially there was only a prize for the winner, but over the years, additional in-round competitions have been added to ensure all standards of player
can be in with a chance of winning a trophy, even if the most coveted blue jacket is out of reach.

Competitions and the rules

Although the stableford competition and nearest the pin are fairly obvious to adjudicate, many of the other trophies have finer points and nuances to ensure we all 'score' to the same standards

The winner on Stableford Points

Nothing too rocket science here, it is the winner with the most stableford points based on their WHS Handicap and Course Index. If they do not have an official handicap one can be arranged by negotiation with Mister G up to a maximum of 28 (for men).

Nearest the pin - 15th Hole

Needs to be on the green and adjudged to be closer than any previous shots

Longest Drive - 16th Hole

A risk and reward hole. A wicked dog leg around a lake it may be possible for the big hitters to go straight at the pin, and due to this alternative strategy distance is measured by proximity to the pin. Yes it is effectively another nearest the pin. In order to qualify the ball must NOT be in a hazard but could be off the fairway

Everyone has a chance

The following trophies are easily achievable by any standard of player

The Biggest Deviation from Course

The commando trophy is awarded to the most trying of particpants. One who may take the most shots but gets little return for their efforts.

Dig for Victory

This is won by the player that takes the most shots in a bunker. This would ALSO include any shots into a bunker that is designated GUR. A free drop will permitted as per normal rules but for the purposes of the count it is a plus one.

Jacques Cousteau

The most balls that enter a water hazard. This includes any shots that remain playable (or dry) but have traversed the hazard line indicated by stakes.
